It is one thing to assert that one should consider taking an open systems viewpoint to be fundamental; it is another to be able to do so in practice. In this talk I discuss how it is possible to effectively and efficiently describe the evolution of open quantum systems in general, given that there are fundamental limitations inherent in the description of open quantum systems, and I present the state of the art with respect to the prospects for circumventing these limitations.
